Larry Feirman State & Local Government January 29, 2021 Blog Entry 4B Our CP and Comparison(s) to: “An Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching” and “Hallmarks of a Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community” The Community Partner I chose, Project Read is one that is familiar to me from a previous involvement. I worked with a seventh grader for well over a year and we became regular learning partners.  He taught me as much as I taught him.  I purposely chose this organization because of its proximity to my home, that my school age children could do their homework at the same time as I worked with my student, Gabriel.  Having my family witness first hand how one gives back to the community in some way is vital to all. Having read through the PowerPoint presentation on “Catholic Social Teaching” and the “Hallmarks of a Notre Dame de Namur Community, the first thought that came to mind was this; these statements, words of wisdom and comparison are to me...

UPDATED 020721   Larry Feirman State & Local Government   January 29, 2021                                         Community Partner Project I will be working with middle school and high school students that have signed up with the city of Redwood City, through their parks & recreations department.  This national program actually originated in Redwood City years ago. Previously, I and my 2 high schoolers also worked as tutors with Project Read finding it to be rewarding for student and tutor. There is a 6-month commitment for a minimum of 1 hour per week.  I have comitted to that requirement.  All work is done via zoom calls. There is training involved 2-3 days for a few hours each night (before COVID), but since I was previously trained, a 1 hour refresher is mandatory and will occur this week (Feb.4th, 2021)....

Since we are studying Government at all levels, I thought this might be of interest to my colleagues.     Starting with a state/local focus is worthwhile. Larry Feirman           PSC-2301      January 11, 2021 Week-1 || Written Assignment #2 Q: In what way did your CP arise from a local need or perspective? Why doesn’t, might not the local government fill this need adequately? To whom is your CP accountable? A:  My decision to reach out to a former organization that I had discovered and volunteered for was:      National Center For Equine Facilitated Therapy.   https://www.nceft.org/ My interest in this organization was/is three (3) fold:   • I am an equestrian and love riding, whether it be Trail, English or Western Saddle, etc. Love of horses and people • Desire to volunteer in an area of interest, where I could speak from experience to all ages and backgrounds of those needing therapeutic assistance • Proximity to my home (Redwood City-Woodside) • Friends either worked there or were board members The organization receives funding t...
Larry Feirman           PSC-2301 January 11, 2021 Assignment 1 Reflection – Chapter 1 || New Directions for State and Local Government The assignment of reading Chapter 1 for me was apropos, in light of our recent elections.  We witnessed the variables in how states and even counties, district, etc., have wide variations on how their municipalities are managed.  Voting, municipal services, etc. can be and are in many cases disparate.  A much more focused, best practices approach is sorely needed (CSG needs to take a more active role).  Overlapping, decentralization, lack of a standardized communications platform accounts for costly waste by states and municipalities. “An efficient government is one that maximizes the output(services)from a given input (resources)… (Bowman, Kearney. Pg.3) Although many fear that Federalism can stretch too far and too wide in state and cities (municipalities), in instances where Federal fundi...
